无耻帝国
这篇书评可能有关键情节透露
If it was not due to the bankruptcy of Purdue Pharma and the "downfall" of third generation of the Sacklers, this book would not exist. The three generations of opioid businesses challenges the society's moral boundaries. Although under life threats, the author was courageous enough to paint a solid picture of Sackler's endless desire of greed and power in this book.
Shameless acts
1. Intentionally led drug abuses - the Purdue Pharma denied knowing about drug abuse while the therapeutic effects of the drug underperformed leading to overdoses and addictions 2. Fictitious recommendations - falsified letters of recommendations under bogus names and addresses 3. FDA corruption - quid pro quo to FDA including publishing of papers on scientific journals in exchange for drug approvals
Unshakable empire
1. Political backed - alliance with politicians and close relationship with former US president 2. Carrot and stick - hiring of attorneys who originally prosecuted against the company and sending witnesses to the ER prior to testifying against the company 3. Unlimited sales commissions - No upper limit for OxyContin salesman 4. Art collection and donations - donating art collections to prestigious universities and museums globally to build fame and hide its evil underneath
The end?
Getting away with no punishment (so far) - Billions of dollars was already transferred to Sackler family members' pockets from Purdue Pharma before the company declared bankruptcy which prevented any ongoing litigations against the company
For millions of lost lives and broken families, the justice has yet to come.
*Mundiphama, the sister company of Purdue Pharma, has been exporting OxyContin to other countries around the world including China and Brazil.
